EL GRITO DE INDEPENDENCIA:

On September 15 and 16th, we are hosting “El Grito Portland,” the largest celebration in the Northwest during Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM), which is celebrated from September 15 to October 15, honoring the rich history, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose families come from Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The celebration of the HHM was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, with the approval of Public Law 100-402. The significance of El Grito on September 15 goes beyond commemorating fight for Mexican Independence and corresponds with the opening of HHM, but it also highlights our beautiful diversity in the Latino/a/x/e culture, which spans several Latin American countries’ independence, culture, and traditions. This day specifically celebrates the anniversary of the Independence of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Chile.

As the Mexican President presents the nation’s traditional El Grito in Mexico City, so too will Portland commemorate Mexico’s independence at the Rose Quarter Commons.
