FLY-Futures for Latinx Youth

Career Day, a part of El Grito Portland, brought by MOYPA. This event empowers local Latinx high school students to explore diverse career paths and realize their dreams. Panelists inspire students to envision their futures while fostering pride and belonging in their community by providing a platform for Latinx leaders to share personal stories and actionable advice.

Why does this matters?

Latino youth represent the largest racial and ethnic minority group among children in the United States today and are a growing force within our nation’s future workforce and economy. However, many of these students face unique challenges as first-generation learners navigating unfamiliar systems—often without the guidance or resources their non-Latinx peers might have.
Their barriers include a lack of visible role models, limited access to career exploration opportunities, and systemic inequities that can hinder their aspirations. Research shows that parents’ educational attainment significantly predicts a child’s academic and occupational success (citation needed), emphasizing the importance of providing additional support and mentorship to bridge this gap.
